Generally speaking, graphs are used to visualize. Depending on the purpose, certain graphs are used.

Examples:

Bar plots can be used for comparisons of many groups (such as, different genres, types). Using the same scales the groups can be placed side-by-side vertically or horizontally.

Histograms can be used for bell curves, both positive and negative, among others. Usually there are many observations under one group per graph. Most histograms measure many observations within one group on a common x and y scale.

Matplotlib has a plethora of different graphs, including the specific ones mentioned in your question.
