QWERTY layout was chosen because it prevented the typewriter from jamming. Furthermore,  alphabetic layout was not considered to be optimal layout because placing keys in alphabetic order did not increase typing speed for typist and beginner. Lastly, dvorak layout was not considered due to its bias for right handed typists.
